Like lion numbers, habitat for lions has declined as human population, land cultivation and numbers of livestock have steadily increased in areas lions call home. African Uncivilized Dogs are one of Africa’s most thriving predators. Monarto Zoo has a thriving Cheetah breeding program with six cubs born in 2012. She’s very playful with the other chimps, visitors and zoo keepers. Love giraffes? A herd of five zebras housed following to the Dark Rhinos contains adult females, their offspring and a dominant male. The seven females and four males formed the founding members of what was to become our successful captive breeding program, which has seen more than 20 foals born. Monarto has had excellent breeding triumph with four calves bred since 2011, helping to ensure the coming of this species within the region. The program has assisted in building the population of an animal of which less than 60 individuals remain in the wild. My involvement with rhinos really started when I became Curator of Monarto Zoo’s animal collection in premature 2003 at the same time the zoo imported seven rhinos from Kruger National Park. Although abundant of these animals went on to another institutions' Sahara (a ten year impaired male) and Mopani (a six year impaired female) stayed with us to unite our single white female rhino Uhuru, bred at Singapore Zoo.
